Program Information

AYA Admission Requirements

The UNO - INNSBRUCK ACADEMIC YEAR ABROAD is open to undergraduates from all accredited colleges and universities who have at least sophomore ranking and are in good academic standing at their home institution. All students  must be abide by regulations governing the program, and the sponsoring institutions reserve the right to require the withdrawal of any student whose personal or academic conduct warrants such action. Students may apply for the full academic year or for one semester only.

Language Requirements

Students WITH German Proficiency

Students with certified proficiency in German may choose the full immersion track. Verification from the Foreign Language or German Department Chair of Advanced or Advanced Intermediate standing, approved language course certificates such as those issued by the Goethe Institute, or a minimum of four semesters of college level German and successful completion of the University of Innsbruck's language proficiency exam may exempt an applicant from the language study requirements expected from all other AYA participants.

Such students with German proficiency will be fully integrated into the Austrian University system and will be able to enroll in regularly offered courses at the University of Innsbruck, in addition to any AYA courses required. They will  need to consult their Advisor, Department Chairs, and Dean at their home institution when selecting classes  from the regular LFU course offerings. Arrangements for such students will be handled individually through the Division of International Education in consultation with the Resident Director. This coordination  will ensure that courses are accepted for transfer credit.

Students WITHOUT German Proficiency

Preference will be given to applicants with prior knowledge of German, however, students with no prior knowledge of German may also apply. If accepted for the UNO - INNSBRUCK ACADEMIC YEAR ABROAD, students with little or  no knowledge of German must enroll in an intensive German language program prior to registration in Innsbruck.  Programs such as those offered by the Goethe Institutes in the U.S. and Germany, or by LFU itself, are recommended to prepare students for living and studying in German-speaking Austria.

Information on those programs will be provided upon request. Once in Innsbruck, students will continue their  study of German each semester. In addition, students will enroll in a variety of "Special Topics" courses  created especially for the Academic Year Abroad program. These courses are taught in English by an international faculty and are open to regular LFU students.

    Communications

Participants on the UNO-Innsbruck AYA program have many options available to contact their family and friends back in the U.S. We have listed below the most popular methods that AYA students use to communicate while in Innsbruck.

    1) Skype™ - The popular computer to computer is FREE. High speed internet is available for all participants in the dormitory. Skype also has an online chat function built into the software.

    2) Cell Phones - Contract and prepaid cell phones are the most popular option by AYA participants. The majority of students will sign-up for one year plan or if in Innsbruck for 6 months or less those participants will buy a prepaid phone and just pay as they talk.

Here is a short list of cellular phone providers in Innsbruck.
    T-Mobile
    One
    3 (Drei)
    A1
    Tele-Ring
    Yesss!

    3) Phone calling cards - Available in tobacco/ newspaper stores were a popular method of communication but are now almost obsolete. However, they do offer the best price for phone service while being used from a land line.

    Meals

Currently, all participants on the AYA program will receive a bi-weekly cash meal allowance. Students are free to use this cash as they choose. However, the allowance is intended to provide the main meal of the day, which in Austria is the mid-day meal, on all class days at one of the student cafeteria facilities ("Mensa"). These are excellent facilities used not only by students but also by faculty and business professionals in the community for healthy, low cost meal selections. A typical "Mittagessen" is a three-course meal with soup, hot entree with vegetable, small salad and dessert. There is usually a grill section as well as a section for meatless "whole-food" offerings. Students also have cooking facilities where they reside, and most students prepare their own meals. For fresh produce and other groceries, several markets and shops are close by. Local restaurants abound near the dorm and throughout the city of Innsbruck, offering typical regional cuisine as well as many different ethnic cuisines. As would be expected, restaurant prices in Innsbruck run the gamut from low to very pricey, but students soon find the places they enjoy and can afford.

    History of Austria

Today's Republic of Austria is a small state, whose origins can be traced far back into history. Populated since prehistoric times, Austria 's location in the heart of Europe means that it has had its share of the continent's historical developments. It evolved from a border region into a powerful empire and multiracial state, which collapsed at the end of the First World War. In 1918, the small, newly proclaimed Republic of Austria had at first to come to terms with its European environment. Austria emerged from the Second World War and the sufferings associated with it as a state that feels secure in its existence and which plays a decisive role in Europe.

    Medical Insurance & Safety Abroad

Studying abroad is an exciting experience for a student. You get to know a different environment, culture, and perhaps even learn a foreign language. This can be an experience that will shape your career goals and open your mind to the rest of the world. Safety should be considered when choosing a study abroad program.    While no study program can absolutely guarantee total safety or elimination of all risks, the study abroad program you choose should be one that can give you a certain degree of comfort.  The University of New Orleans and our partner institutions work together to provide a safe environment for our participants.

During your AYA studies, you will be covered by a comprehensive study abroad insurance policy for illness and accident. This policy is required by UNO for all students studying abroad. This policy is normally effective beginning September 15th for the Fall semester and February 15th for the Spring semester.

Students will also be required to purchase the student health plan available to University of Innsbruck students that will provide medical care for colds/ flu and other basic medical needs.

If you wish to have additional coverage while you are traveling in Europe prior to the AYA orientation, please contact: T.W. Lord & Associates at 1-800-633-2360 or at info@twlord.com. The additional cost of the extended coverage is $1.00/day.
