Faculty, Staff & Program Participants:

The University of New Orleans has conducted the Prague Summer Seminars for 13 years. The 2008 program will offer an array of courses from the Arts to Social Sciences and Humanities. The faculty teaching these seminars is a mix of Czech and American professors. All the teachers are familiar with international travel, are comfortable teaching in an international setting, and seize the opportunity to adapt the specific subject matter of their courses to the enriching environment of Prague, the Czech Republic, and Central Europe.

The program coordinator will accompany the program and will staff an office on location. She will be available to facilitate participants and faculty and help with the logistics of the program. The academic director will also be on site to help with student and faculty questions regarding course work, accreditation, and other academic issues. Several Czech speakers will be able to assist with their language skills!   The participants of the Prague Summer Seminars come from all over the U.S. as well as from the Czech Republic and other countries. This program - due to its wealth of courses and the attractiveness of its setting - has traditionally welcomed a wide range of 'students,' from the undergraduate to the adult learner. Often the most memorable experiences of our participants are the exchanges and interactions with their peers and teachers, in class as well as in the pub, the dorm, the café . . . , and the friendships formed on this program are often lasting. Living and studying in Prague for four weeks, immersing yourself in the culture, getting to know your Czech hosts, fellow students, and teachers will certainly leave you with a lasting impression and good understanding of this city, country, and culture.

How To Enroll:

You can enroll in two courses and earn six credit hours. All credits can be transferred to your home institution. However, it is your responsibility to verify with your advisor and/or department that the credits you take in Prague can be applied to your curriculum or course of study. If you are not currently enrolled in college, but still want to receive the credit, you can enroll as a non-degree seeking student. To enroll for credit, you need to fill out a university application and send in a transcript (see application form).

*Fees and services included may be subject to change.

Scheduling:

Classes will meet for approx. 2 hours a day per course, Monday through Thursday. This schedule leaves long, 3-day weekends for optional field trips (Vienna, Austria & Berlin, Germany), individual travel, and personal discoveries or time off. During the week, there will be other planned activities such as lectures, film screenings, informal dinners, museum visits, short class excursions, etc., most of which will be optional.

Facilities:

We are using the facilities of the Faculty of Social Sciences, a college within Charles University, one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Europe. The classroom building is very centrally located, along the banks of the Vltava River, with beautiful views over the river and to the Prague castle. The classrooms are modern, friendly, and comfortable. The building also houses the office for the Prague Summer Seminars during the summer. The classroom building is within easy access to the dorm, using public transportation. Prague's oldest coffeehouse, the Café Slavia, is just next door from our classroom building, and the National Theater, Charles Bridge, and the Old Town are also very close.
