Courses

Participants of the Prague Strings program are required to enroll in both courses and will earn 6 hours of college credit.

Course 1:
Chamber Music and Repertoire for String Quartets: Study with the Prague "String Quartet-in-Residence" (MUS 4001)

The focus of this course is on performance practice with the first two weeks of practice/preparation and the last two weeks of study with a member of the String Quartet-in-Residence, Prague's celebrated "Lamborghini Quartet."

Students will be assigned to a string ensemble or play within a pre-formed ensemble. Ensembles will be assigned based on tapes and will be grouped by ability level. Students will practice the repertoire chosen by the Quartet in Residence, of which they will be informed prior to the program. Masterclasses, a performance by the Quartet in Residence, and a final concert by all students are also part of the course.

Course 2:
A Performers Guide to 18th & 19th c. Musical Styles (MUS 4001)

Instructor: Frankie Kelly

This course is designed for the professional music student and forms a part of the proposed music seminar. Extractions of treatises and texts will be presented in a classroom setting in order to directly apply the science of interpretation to the proposed repertoire chosen for the seminar. The professor will provide copies of informative articles as recently published by world experts in the area of music performance practice. In addition, some analysis will be required. It is assumed that students participating in this course have completed at least one course in form and analysis.

The course will further provide a background about the music history of the Czech Lands, introduce some key composers and musicians of the area, and familiarize students with the active music scene, well-known ensembles, and famous music halls of Prague and the Czech Republic. Students will be expected to attend several concerts in Prague, the cost of which are not included in the program cost.

The weekend field trip to Vienna is highly recommended for participants in this course.
