Program Information Faculty, Staff & Program Participants
The University of New Orleans is excited to announce its new Prague Strings program for Student String Quartets, offered in cooperation with its well-established and very popular Prague Summer Seminars. The faculty teaching this music performance seminar is a mix of Czech and American professors and musicians. A major part of the program will be taught by the members of our Prague String Quartet in Residence, "The Lamborghini String Quartet." All the teachers are fluent in English, professional musicians and teachers, familiar with international travel, comfortable teaching in an international setting, and seize the opportunity to adapt their courses to the incomparable musical environment of Prague, the Czech Republic, and Central Europe. The program coordinator will accompany the program and will staff an office on location. She will be available to facilitate participants and faculty and help with the logistics of the program. The academic director will also be on site to help with student and faculty questions regarding course work, accreditation, and other academic issues. Several Czech speakers will be able to assist with their language skills! The participants of Prague Strings come from all over the U.S. as well as from the Czech Republic and other countries. Some of the most memorable experiences of our participants will be the exchanges and interactions with their peers and teachers, in class as well as in the concert hall, the pub, the dorm, the café . . . , and the friendships formed on this program might be long-lasting. Living and studying music in Prague for four weeks, immersing yourself in the culture, getting to know your Czech hosts, fellow students, and teachers will certainly leave you with a lasting impression and good understanding of this city, country, and culture.
Program Cost and What Is Included:
*Fees and services included may be subject to change.
If you would like to stay in a single room, a single supplement cost will be added to your invoice (see Fees and Housing).
Participants in Prague Springs are required to enroll in both courses offered and earn six credit hours. All credits can be transferred to your home institution. However, it is your responsibility to verify with your advisor and/or department that the credits you take in Prague can be applied to your curriculum or course of study. How to apply to the Prague Strings Music Seminar: At the moment, only applications for violin, viola, and cello are accepted. While preference is given to pre-formed student string ensembles, individual students will also be considered and, if accepted, will be placed in an ensemble according to their skills. 1. Please submit a recording of two contrasting movements on the instrument which you will be studying in Prague during the summer (violin, viola, or cello) by March 21, 2008. The selection committee prefers recordings in digital format MP3 sent to the email address: prague@uno.edu (If you have problems creating or sending such digital files, please send a CD or tape to: Prague Strings, c/o Irene Ziegler, Metropolitan College, ED 118, University of New Orleans, New Orleans, LA 70148, USA - make sure the CD/tape arrives on time!) 2. Fill out the online application form and submit it with your $300 deposit. 3. Request from your Registrar's Office that an official transcript be sent to: Please note that a recording cannot be considered unless the program application, deposit and transcript for the respective student have all been received. Classes will meet for approx. 2 hours a day per course, Monday through Thursday. This schedule leaves long, 3-day weekends for optional field trips (Vienna, Austria & Berlin, Germany), individual travel, and personal discoveries or time off. During the week, there will be other planned activities such as lectures, film screenings, informal dinners, museum visits, short class excursions, etc., most of which will be optional. We are using the facilities of the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts. The classroom building is very centrally located, on one of the must beautiful squares in Prague: Malostranske Namesti. In the Malostrana district, it is situated in the center of historic Prague, with lots of charming restaurants and shops, quaint streets, clanging streetcars, and the charm of a tiny old city within the city of Prague. Using public transportation (as all Praguers do), the music classroom building is within easy access to the dorm and to the classroom building and office of the Prague Summer Seminars. Prague's famous Charles Bridge, the beautifully ornate, Baroque church of St. Nicholas, and the Prague Castle are also within easy reach.
We have reserved a limited number of seats on a Delta flight from New Orleans via Atlanta to Prague, departing the US on July 4 (to arrive in Prague on July 5), returning from Prague on August 2. You do not have to book this flight. But if you are interested in traveling to Prague with a group, please click here for more information on this flight option. We strongly recommend you consider purchasing insurance for trip cancellation and baggage loss. Please check with your travel agent for coverage and quotes.
