Why should you choose this program?

First, this is an academic program. You will be taking college-level courses. While the amount of work is not overwhelming, you will be asked to prepare class assignments and earn credit that is an investment in your academic future.

Second, this program combines both travel and residential experience. THE GLORIES OF FRANCE involves visiting many exciting places, but a major part of the program is spent in residence in Montpellier. During that time you are less a tourist and more a student residing abroad for the summer.

Third, this program offers the opportunity to make new friends. In addition to meeting the other participants selected from schools across the United States, you will also get to know students from around the world in your classes.

Fourth, this program is fun! The professional staff of the University of New Orleans are dedicated to the objective of assuring that your summer school experience is enjoyable as well as productive.

"I've learned a lot about myself, including the fact that I have a lot to learn!
I'm definitely less intimidated by the idea of a foreign country.
I'm eager to come back and share the experiences I had with my family."
-- Melanie Russell, Covington LA

La Belle France

Perhaps more than any other country in Europe, France has something for everyone. The physical beauty of its Mediterranean coastline has few rivals in the world. Artists and writers have flocked to its capital for generations --for centuries, it seems, France has set the standards for elegance, style, and luxury. What better combination, then, for a wonderful, productive, and enjoyable summer than for you to study in France and experience THE GLORIES OF FRANCE!

"Spending a month in France gave me a chance to feel much stronger and more capable of taking on challenges because I had to learn to make it in a different culture.
I learned so much about myself and fell in love with the French way of life. Magnifique!"
-- Dina Desalvo, Conway AR

The core of the program is a five-week stay in Montpellier, France, where students attend classes in French language or a variety of other subjects. Located in the south of France, just seven miles from Mediterranean beaches, Montpellier combines the excitement of a dynamic cosmopolitan city with the provincial charm and graceful lifestyle of southern France.

"France has left me with many great memories. Montpellier is the perfect city for students. I have learned to go with the flow and have made friends for life."
-- Corey McAveeney, Merrimack NH

The Academic Program

Classes are held Monday through Thursday in order to leave long weekends for individual travel and group excursions.

"I submerged myself in the culture, just like I wanted to.
I achieved all of the goals that I had set . I improved so much!"
-- Lucy Dyer, Kenner LA

In Montpellier, students will be housed in single rooms that are part of the co-ed dormitories of the Université de Montpellier. The residence hall is conveniently located just a short distance from the university and the center of the city.

The Glories of France is a college level program. Students are encouraged to be independent and to use their leisure time to their best advantage as long as mandatory meetings, excursions, and classes are attended. Participants have many options: The nearby beaches of Palavas, Carnon, and La Grande Motte are just a bus ride away; the University staff organizes events such as movies, sports, and parties; or you may choose to stroll downtown to the Place de La Comedie for a bit of café sitting.

Students will have three-day weekends to explore the exciting sights that Europe has to offer. They may opt to schedule their own visits to the Riviera, Italy, or other places of interest.

"I have had a blast this past month! I'm glad I came out of
my shyness shell and got to know everybody."
-- Patsy Jones, Little Rock AR

Included in the price of the program is a weekend excursion to Paris. This year, our group may visit such famous places as the Louvre, the Sacre Coeur, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Centre Pompidou, the Musee d'Orsay, or Versailles. The excursions are handled in a way for students to feel more like natives than tourists with lots of free time scheduled for exploring and shopping in the cities. The tours will be supervised by UNO staff and will include hotels and transportation.
