| UNO maintains direct, bilateral exchange programs with partner institutions in as many as twelve countries. Bilateral exchange programs allow the partner institutions to "swap" or "exchange" students. The students pay tuition (and in some arrangements, housing and boarding fees) at their home institution, then attend the host institution abroad. Such exchanges require that the number of students going from each institution remains the same over a three-year period. The financial benefit for UNO students going on these exchanges for either a semester or academic year is clear: students pay UNO tuition (well known to be a bargain on the national tuition scale) and they can apply federal financial aid to those fees.
