Dear Incoming exchange student,
We are happy you want to apply for an exchange with the University of New Orleans and look forward to welcoming you to New Orleans. There are a few important steps that you have to follow in order to apply and get accepted.
1. You must apply and be accepted locally, at your home university. Contact the student exchange office at your own university for more information.
2. Fill out our online personal information form
3. Apply for admissions to the University of New Orleans. You must do this online at the following link: http://admissions.uno.edu/app.cfm (make sure you read all of the instructions on this page BEFORE you go to that application).
NOTE: UNO is only accepting online applications.
The UNO online application for admission is a general form for all potential students, and asks for a lot of information. You have to read it through carefully. It is important that you answer all questions correctly. Read each question in the application carefully! Pay particular attention to the following things:
- Create a username for yourself, and keep a record of it. You can return to this application if you cannot finish it in one sitting.
- Click here for screen shots of the application with comments (pictures of the different screens you'll go through).
- At the top right of each screen is the help button. Click there for explanations of each screen.
- On the "Personal Information" screen, in the lower part of the screen, there is a section that asks informaton such as your birth date, birth state & city, etc. This is very important information that we must gather in order to fill out your immigration documents.
- The type of visa you will have is J1: exchange visitor.
- On the "Admission Term and Program" screen, you must fill out certain items in very specific ways. This is very important!
- You must specify the correct semester in which you plan to begin your studies at UNO
- You must choose "TRANSFER" for your application type
- You must select "No" as the answer to the question: "Are you seeking a degree at UNO?"
- For academic career, you should choose Undergraduate. For students in their 5th year or beyond in your studies, you may wan to choose Graduate. It is a good idea to consult with the Exchange coordinator if you have questions about this. You will have to fill out this application AGAIN if you answer incorrectly to this question.
- For "Program," select "Other Undergraduate" (or "Other Graduate")
- For "Plan," select "International Exchange Student"
- For "Sub-Plan," select "No Sub-Plan"
- In the Referral Code field, type in "F4A2E." This is case sensitive, so be sure to use capital letters
- The "Educational Background" screen that asks for high school information will show only for Undergraduate applicants
- The "Residency Information" screen is only for people from Lousiana. Skip this screen.
- You should not be asked to pay the $40 application fee. If so, do not pay this fee.
- Note: If you receive information that you do not understand regarding your application, e-mail us at isep@uno.edu. You may wish to forward us any communication you receive from UNO regarding this so we understand the nature of the issue.
- Final note: please print out a copy of your application and include it with your required documents.
4. Once you are finished with your online application, you must send us (UNO ISEP) the following original documents:
- International Student’s Statement of Financial Support (original document required for admission) Note: a second original statement should be kept to show at the U.S. embassy or consular office when applying for your visa.
- For exchange programs including housing, these documents must certify that students have $1,686 for one semester and $3,372 for two semesters.
- For exchange programs not including housing, these documents must certify that students have $4,741 for one semester and $9,482 for two semesters.
- Summary of Educational Experience
- Proof of English Proficiency level (for example: TOEFL score documentation)
- Immunization Memo and Proof of Immunization Compliance. Get the new form here.
- Letter of recommendation from at least one professor or academic advisor
- Letter of intent from you, the candidate
- Transcript(s) from home university (list of courses taken and grades)
- Photocopy of Title Page of your Passport
- Note: you may receive an e-mail telling you to send these documents to another office. Do not send them there. If you send them to another office, it will significantly delay our ability to issue your immigration documents.
- Send all these documents to:

5. Once you have been admitted to UNO, we will send your program coordinator your official letter of admission and form DS-2019. A DS-2019 is the document you will need to apply for your student visa. If you are not familiar with how to get a student visa, click here for some advice.
6.
Note: all new international students will have to arrive prior to the official move-in date for most campus housing. Please be aware of this, and that you may have to pay a minor fee for early move-in. You should make arrangements for this directly with your housing office.
For programs that include housing, students should go to the Pontchartrain Hall web site (http://housing.uno.edu/PontchartrainHall.htm). Be sure to identify yourself as an exchange student.
For programs that do not include housing, students may choose where they would prefer to live. You have several options:
1. Pontchartrain Hall (http://housing.uno.edu/PontchartrainHall.htm). This is a traditional U.S. dormitory opened in Fall 2007. See their web site for floor plans and pricing.
2. Privateer Place (http://www.campushousing.com/uno/html/index.php). This is more of an apartment complex (rather than a dormitory) run by a non-UNO company, but is located on campus. Check their web site for floor plans, pricing, and leasing information. Note: make sure you get a room confirmation in writing (via email or post).
3. Off-campus (private) housing. There is no clearing house for this kind of information, but one good source is the OISS (Office of International Students and Scholars) classified ads. To sign up, go to the OISS web site: http://oiss.uno.edu/
