Optional Weekend Field Trips:

Day trips to Terezin & Lidice
An overnight trip to Český Krumlov & České Budějovice
A long weekend in Vienna, Austria

Terezin and Lidice, Czech Republic

In this field trip, we will take you to the place where the Nazi occupation led to not only the most tragic chapter in the history of a town but also the catastrophic fate of many thousands of innocent victims during the Second World War. We travel, by bus, to this wonderful town of Terezin, which is a 60 km beautiful drive from Prague through quiet Czech countryside.

Terezin is an outstanding example of a military fort in the style of Classicist architecture. In the course of World War II, the town was ill-fated as a 'model' concentration camp for Jews from all over Europe. A Memorial to the victims of Nazism and the Holocaust has been established here as a memento of Modern European History.

We will also travel to Lidice, a town demolished by the Nazis in retaliation for the assassination of one of their most powerful, tyrannical leaders. Now where the old town sat is a powerful memorial to the innocent lives lost in this terrible tragedy.

The cost of this field trip is $50. This fee includes on-site lunch and facilitates any set-up costs for the trip.

Overnight field trip to Český Krumlov & České Budějovice

Driving through the Czech countryside on a chartered bus, participants start to get the feel of the "real" Czech Republic as soon as we exit the outskirts of Prague. Of course Prague is fabulous, but a foray into the Bohemian lands is essential to anyone wishing to tap into the magic of the Czech Lands.

Arriving in Český Krumlov (a UNESCO World Heritage site) on Friday evening, we will stay in a cozy hostel and will enjoy a true Czech dinner party with great food and first-rate entertainment. The program will also include a tour of the Castle and Renaissance Theater that make Český Krumlov so famous, plus free time to explore this magical town and maybe do a little shopping.

On the following morning we will make our way to České Budějovice where we will tour the Budvar brewery and enjoy local cuisine. You will also have free time to explore the this jewel of South Bohemia and shop before we drive back to Prague.

The cost for this weekend field trip is $200.00 and includes transportation (bus), accommodation, group tours, some meals, and entrance fees on group tours.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna is not only the capital of Austria but also one of the major art capitals in Europe. Its musical history is unmatched; more composers lived and worked in Vienna than in any other place in the world. Museums and art galleries abound, where especially the collections of early 20th century artists such as Klimt and Schiele are noteworthy. And the imperial history and grandeur of the Habsburg Empire is ever-present.

A beautiful and relaxing train ride through the landscape of Bohemia (ca. 4 hours) will bring us to Vienna Thursday night, where we will check into the All You Need Hotel. Friday morning, we will embark on a guided tour of central Vienna on foot and by streetcar, including the majestic St. Stephen's Cathedral, the famed Ringstrasse (the grand boulevard of Vienna's representative buildings), the colorful Hundertwasser Museum, and several other important historic and artistic landmarks. Friday evening, we will eat dinner in a typical Viennese Heuriger inn where vintners serve locally produced wine in a rustic atmosphere.

Saturday morning you will have free time to explore Vienna. Consider touring the breathtaking Schönbrunn Palace (the summer residence of the Habsburgs), or sites such as Mozart's Figarohaus for music, the Hundertwasserhaus for art and architecture, the Literati Café Central for English and philosophy, or the Sigmund Freud Museum. In the evening, we will attend a concert of classical music in one of the many historic theaters of Vienna. Sunday morning is again unscheduled time for you to spend as you wish, maybe shopping, more sight-seeing, trying out one of the famous pastry shops, or visiting one of the many beautiful churches and cathedrals, before we leave for Prague in the afternoon.
The cost for this field trip is $450.00. It includes transportation (train), double accommodation, city tour, public transit pass, a concert ticket, and some meals & entrance fees. Single rooms may be available depending on date of application; the cost for a single room (single supplement) is $95.00 and will be charged in addition to the field trip fee.
(Prices and services included may be subject to change.)

"I am glad I went to every one of the field trips and activities. The program is what you make it and you have to push yourself to get the most."
Jonathan Wilson, Tampa, Florida
