Little more than six months ago I arrived in Turkey with little more than the wind at my back and the sun in my eyes. In the first three months before the fall semester began, I visited places as different as the capital, Ankara, to a small tea farming village in the northeast. I ate new food, met new people, learned new things, and most importantly of all, I made new friends.

In my time here, I've ridden horses, seen spectacular natural wonders, eaten foods that would make sensitive stomachs cringe, and discovered new and wonderful things about myself. Istanbul is one of the major metropolises of the world; that goes without saying. But there is so much to discover and many hidden jewels in the city, from a Japanese garden to a tucked away South American restaurant. At first glance it seems like you can know Istanbul after only a few short weeks, but further scrutiny would show you just how wrong you are. With more restaurants than you can shake a finger at and more historical sights than it would seem possibl, this incredible 2,600 year-old city also has a vibrant nightlife and the country offers much for the intrepid traveler to discover and enjoy.

Another large benefit to studying abroad in Turkey is, surprise surprise, the opportunity to learn about a misunderstood region. Yeditepe offers fantastic courses on getting to know your new home and on the Middle Eastern region. I've taken advantage of this spectacular opportunity by loading up on courses that teach the history, the culture, and the politics of the Middle East. These courses have shown that the war-battered region is not so easily pinned down with a few pigeon-holing terms. Yeditepe has also granted me the opportunity to write and research my senior honor's thesis (about the current ruling party of Turkey) with professors that are experts on all facets of Turkish politics, which is essential for my career as a political science major at UNO.

I am a recipient of both the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for Study Abroad and the UNO SG Presidential Award for Study Abroad. If it wasn't for the combined help of these awards, this experience would not have been possible. And because of these scholarships, I can look forward to another six months in the Turkish Republic, learning the politics, learning the language, and learning the people-- truly a once in a lifetime experience.

This Spring, I’ll be attending Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey. I will be taking classes in History, Turkish language, and Turkish Mythology. I am very grateful for the SG Senatorial Award as it will help me make this trip possible without the worry of student loans. Studying abroad and experiencing a culture I am interested in is crucial to my academic growth as an aspiring historian.

While in Turkey, I plan to produce a topic on which to write my senior honors thesis, which I will complete my senior year. This trip will not only give me the experience of a lifetime, but expose me to a new language that I can use in graduate study. It will also afford me the opportunity to examine primary sources that are not available in the United States which will greatly aid me in writing my thesis.

By being granted the opportuntiy to study abroad, I will benefit from not only that incredible experience, but I will also be exposed to a language relevant to the area I want to study, the Middle East, and I will be able to complete a compelling thesis-- all of which will increase my chances of being admitting to a competitive graduate program. It is an incredible honor to receive both the SG Senatorial Award and the Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship as they will both impact my career, my life, and my future as a whole.

During the summer 2012, I travelled to Innsbruck with the UNO International Summer School. Within in a week, I fell in love with the city. I made friends with people from Ireland, Austria, Hungary, Italy, England, and many other European countries. Leaving Innsbruck was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I vowed to go back as soon as possible.

My initial plan was to visit my friends in Innsbruck over Christmas break, but then I decided that I wanted to go back for more than two weeks. So I took the plunge. Without much hesitation, I sent in my application for the Academic Semester Abroad for spring 2013.

Since submitting my application, I began to do everything possible to make sure I would be able to fund my semester in Innsbruck. With the help of the Student Government Award, I will be in Innsbruck from mid-February to mid-August. I cannot wait to be reunited with friends and the city I love.

Study abroad for me was one of the most rewarding things I’ve done as a student at UNO. What helped the experience to have an even stronger impact on my life was the scholarship I received from SG. I was able to use the scholarship to have a fuller experience while abroad. These experiences ranged from being able to take advantage of my exchange university’s weekend trip to Berlin to increasing the production value of the short films I made with the other exchange students I studied with.

For anyone looking to give their college experience a positive challenge and broadening flare they need look no further than study abroad. My time spent at HAW Hamburg helped me learn not only about German culture but also the cultures and lifestyles from all over the world thanks to the fantastic mix of exchange students. As a film student I was able to get a different perspective on the craft by taking classes taught by the media technology professors of HAW Hamburg. The city itself is lively with its night life and beautiful with its busy port. By the end I was saying “Hamburg, mein stadt” or in English “Hamburg, my city”.

I’m forever grateful that I had the opportunity to take this trip and I know it wouldn’t have been as fully realized if it weren’t for SG’s study abroad scholarship.
Go UNO and go HAW Hamburg!!!
